Atelier Charivari is a traditional mask studio in Basel, Switzerland. Since 1976, we have been making handmade masks for Basel Carnival, known locally as Basler Fasnacht.

In Basel, these masks are traditionally called Larven. Outside Basel, many English speakers simply call them carnival masks or Fasnacht masks. This guide explains what we do, how our masks are made, how to visit the studio and what to know before ordering or reserving a mask.

What are Basel Carnival masks, or Larven?

Basel Carnival masks are worn during Basler Fasnacht. In Basel, they are called Larven. A Larve is not just a costume accessory. It gives the Fasnacht figure its face, expression and character.

A Waggis, Ueli, Pierrot, Alti Dante or any custom figure changes completely depending on the shape, painting, size and expression of the mask. That is why choosing the right Larve is an important part of preparing for Basel Carnival.

At Atelier Charivari, many masks are made by hand using traditional materials and techniques. The work can include choosing a form, applying paper and glue, drying, cutting, priming, painting, varnishing, fitting and adding details such as wigs, hats or other accessories.

Not every mask follows exactly the same process. Some are custom-made from a selected form. Others are finished masks or individual pieces that can be viewed online or in the studio.

Custom Basel Carnival masks and individual Larven

If you want a custom Basel Carnival mask, the best way is to visit the studio. We can show you existing forms, discuss the figure, explain what is possible and help you choose a direction.

A custom Larve can be painted according to your wishes and adapted to the character, costume and use at Basel Carnival. This is especially important for traditional figures, special subjects, groups, performers and anyone who wants a mask that feels truly personal.

Available Basel Carnival masks in the Larvenkiste

We also show selected finished masks and individual pieces in our online Larvenkiste. These are not custom-made masks, but available pieces that can be viewed online and requested or reserved for pick-up at the studio.

Please note that not every mask in the physical studio is already listed online. It can also take some time until sold pieces are removed from the website. For this reason, online availability is not guaranteed until we confirm it.

Buying a Basel Carnival mask: online request, studio visit and pick-up

Atelier Charivari is not a standard online mask shop. Handmade Larven need to be seen, discussed and tried on or assessed in person.

For finished masks, you can look online, contact us and request or reserve a piece. For custom-made masks, we strongly recommend visiting the studio in Basel. Pick-up usually takes place at Atelier Charivari, so the mask can be checked and discussed properly.

When should you contact Atelier Charivari for a Fasnacht mask?

Basel Carnival takes place every year in February or March, depending on the date of Easter. If you need a custom mask for the next Fasnacht, it is best to contact us early.

Summer and early autumn are good times to discuss custom masks, special figures or larger projects. Shortly before Carnival, availability becomes limited and custom work may no longer be possible. Finished masks from the Larvenkiste can sometimes help if you need something at short notice.

Masks for Basel Carnival, theatre and special projects

Our main work is connected to Basel Carnival. However, handmade masks from Atelier Charivari can also be relevant for theatre, exhibitions, media projects, performances or special artistic ideas.

If your project is not directly connected to Basler Fasnacht, please contact us early. We can then discuss whether an existing form, a finished piece or a custom-made mask is the right solution.

Why Atelier Charivari matters for Basel mask culture

Atelier Charivari is part of the living mask tradition of Basel. The studio works with forms, handmade Larven, painting, fitting, restoration, documentation and practical knowledge about Basel Carnival masks.

For us, a Larve is more than an object. It is part of a figure, a costume, a subject and a cultural tradition. By continuing this work, Atelier Charivari helps keep Basel mask culture visible and understandable for future generations.
